Each column of the surface is one hour of the UTC day and each row is one day, with the newest nearest. The same figures are below: the mean transactions for each hour, averaged over the days that carried data. Hours the series never covered are drawn flat and grey rather than as quiet hours.
The Deviation colour compares each cell against the same hour on the other days, leaving that cell out of the figure it is judged against — so a busy Tuesday afternoon reads as busy for a Tuesday afternoon rather than just busy. An hour with no other day to compare against keeps its height but is drawn in the idle shade, because “typical” is a claim nothing in the grid supports for it.
How much that comparison is worth varies across the grid, and the colour says so. An hour covered by six other days is drawn at full strength; an hour covered by one is pulled towards the neutral shade, because a departure measured against a single day is weak evidence and drawing it as boldly as a well-supported one invites a conclusion the grid cannot carry. The Most unusual hour figure names its day count for the same reason.
